4th down and 2-point decisions

Every 4th down and every try after a touchdown this season, graded against Ben Baldwin's nfl4th model (MIT license), reproduced exactly. It is nfl4th's recommendation, not this site's model, and it is not adjusted for the teams playing. Try any situation in the calculator.

nfl4th leans toward going for it. It recommends going on 41.8% of this season's 1,206 evaluated 4th downs; coaches went on 16.3%.

So most flagged decisions are kicks the model would have gone for: 105 of 112 (93.8%). They are also the plays where the model is least certain: 87.5% had nfl4th's top two options within 5 points of win probability.

A mistake is a choice that cost 2 points of win probability or more (threshold 0.02), measured at the snap, whatever happened next. Graded through week 7's games so far (1 of 14 played): 94 games. Model nfl4th-ecb7293; the whole season is recomputed each morning, so a model change reaches every play. How it is graded.

Decisions counts every graded 4th down and try (in brackets, 4th downs plus tries): supported by nfl4th, not in a game already decided. A clear mistake is one where nfl4th's top two options were 5 or more points of win probability apart, so the model was not torn. Select a column heading to sort by it. WP lost adds up the mistakes, in points of win probability; per decision divides it by all decisions, so a coach with few decisions shows it. Equal totals share a rank. Each game counts for the head coach who coached it, so an interim coach is ranked for his own games.
